ART / Children’s Museum of the Arts
This foundations class introduces students to art fundamentals and techniques through exploration of notable, diverse artists and art-movements, as well as a range of art mediums in drawing, painting and sculpture. Through a series of different projects including landscapes, portraiture, and abstract sculpture you will be exposed to the fundamentals of composition, color, line, and form. Students will build their artistic talents with technical tools such as perspective, shading, color theory, palette organization, and observational study. Projects will vary between classes according to the age and ability of students. -
Advanced Karate / Ken Wa Kids
This class is open to blue belts and above. Kenwa kids empowers children with awareness, self-control, respect, focus and a comprehensive physical education in an atmosphere of enthusiasm and cooperation. This semester we will offer a higher level class for blue-belts and above. Students are welcome to take both the blue-belt class and the general Karate classes. The program was designed by Sensei Michelle Gay, CMA, RSME/T a 4th degree black belt, 2-time World Champion, Certified Movement Analyst, and author of Brain Breaks for the Classroom - published by Scholastic Teaching Resources -
Art/Small Pieces: Collage & Found Object Art / George Sewell
Artist George Sewell will lead young artists in a series of fun and creative art projects employing a variety of materials and artistic medium, including watercolor, cray pas, marker and collage on paper, cardboard and all manner of found objects. -
Ballet / Ayelet Afek
Baller Barre introduction as well as center work. Class will include stretching and range of motion as well as basic ballet - intermediate exercises which will be incorporated into a dance to be performed at the end of the fall session. 1st & 2nd graders who have taken Ballet before are encouraged to join this class.Waitlist -
Ceramics / Sam White
In this hand-building ceramics class, students will master the 3 foundational techniques: pinch, coil, and slab. They will make sculptures (faces, hands, animals), functional objects (pencil holder, mug, spoon), mysterious inventions, and lucky charms. Designers, engineers, and fine artists are all welcome. Clay is also a great surface to experiment with glazes, carving, and making impressions of objects. -
Game Time
Structured and unstructured time to play a variety of sports and games - both physical and non-physical (cards, board games, brain games.). The focus will be on team sports and games that foster cooperation, competition, following rules, being a team player and a good sport. -
Hip Hop /Frida Persson
This class starts with a warm up and stretch, followed by dance exercises across the floor, floorwork and dance moves that we then use while learning a choreography to an up beat song. At the end of dance class we will work on our improvisation skills in a dance game. All music is fun, positive, energetic and kid friendly. Students should wear sneakers and comfortable dance clothing (pants/leggings) to class. Scratch Video Game Design & Coding / Maker-State
Students will build programs, games, and animations using Scratch: the drag-and-drop, color-coded, event driven programming block editor. Young engineers will learn the fundamentals of programming with this fun introduction from the MIT Media Lab including if/then statements, loop structures, data variables, mathematical and Boolean operators. These skills will be applied to create games as we explore design concepts such as objective, aesthetic, and difficulty curves. This series culminates in a student-led game tournament showcase. This is a premium class and costs $38.50 per class ($616 for 16 weeks.) -
Sewing Club /Children's Institute of Fashion Arts
The Children's Institute of Fashion Arts offers after school programs in sewing, textiles and design for all ages. We teach kids how to design, sew, and create based on their own interests and culture. Small groups give children the opportunity to learn and develop skills at their own pace and ability. Students sew by hand and use sewing machines when available, learning to design and make their own projects. Soccer / NY Soccer
Soccer with Coach Fher’s NY Soccer Sessions are designed to be fun for both children and coaches. Drills are interesting and vary across skills, utilizing various tactics and strategies, and stress team building. Coach Fher’s mission is to teach children the basics and to play soccer in a fun and non-stress environment. Sneakers must be worn to participate in soccer. -
Swimming / Fiorella Sotelo & Chris McKie
Children are expected to bring bathing suits and towels to swimming every week. The child’s name should be on all items. BATHING CAPS are required for boys & girls with hair below their ears. After an initial evaluation, some students may be asked to change to a higher or lower level swim class. If a child is sick or unable to swim, families must provide a written note to the afterschool staff. Accommodations in another class are not guaranteed and students who do not swim are NOT allowed in the pool area. Students may only sign up for 1 swim class per week. If there is availability after registration, another swim class can be added. -
